Financial Aid For College Students

With the cost of college increasing on a yearly basis, many of the students who decide to go to college would not be able to step through the doors if it was not for college financial aid.  In fact, approximately two-thirds of the students who attend college receive financial aid, and out of that percentage around 39 percent receive their aid in the form of a loan.

One of the most important factors in getting financial aid for college is being on time.  Colleges have a certain amount of money that they are allowed to distribute each year.  Those that have their paper work filled out on time and better yet, even ahead of time will be eligible to receive the most money.  There are usually students who get in late, and these students will normally receive some form of aid, but it is not what it could have been if they were on time.  So, be in touch with the financial aid office, and make sure to be well aware of all important dates.

Forms of aid consist of financial aid, grants, scholarships, work study, and loans.  Each one requires different stipulations from the student.  Grants or Pell grants for college are money that is given directly by the federal or state government and does not have to be paid back.  This type of financial aid is normally given to those who struggle financially.  In most cases, a student who receives a Pell grant would not be able to attend college otherwise.

Scholarships for college are offered in many forms and for all kinds of achievements.  There are countless sites that students can comb through to find scholarships that can meet their own attributes.  They can be for good grades, being a philanthropic, and even for being a blue-eyed Native American albino.  There are really no limits to the scholarships that people make available.

Work study programs help the student pay for their education.  This typically requires the student to be employed somewhere on campus and in return the college will pay for part or all of their tuition.  This usually has stipulations that also require the student to keep a certain GPA.

The last form of financial aid is loans.  There are two types of loans that a student can get.  These are subsidized and unsubsidized.   Subsidized are based on need and will not require any interest to be paid before the loan has to be repaid.  Unsubsidized loans acquire interest from the moment they are disbursed, and it accrues until the loan is paid off.  Each loan will be required to be paid off six months after the student is no longer enrolled.  These are the most important loans that should be paid off because once they default credit is permanently ruined.  They also cannot be included in a bankruptcy claim.

No matter what financial aid programs a student is trying to get, they must first fill out their FAFSA forms.  These forms will show if the student needs financial aid and will combine their information with the parent’s info to give the student so much in grants and so much in loans.
